Can you name this plant? . . . and a meme

I hope you're all enjoying the weekend. I have a little challenge for you. The first person to correctly identify this plant will get a little prize. I'm not yet sure what the prize will be, but I promise I'll come up with something that you'll like. So, if you think you know what it is, post a comment.
Now, on to serious business. The wonderful Shari at Whisk has tagged me with a meme. Also, as an aside, earlier this year I was the 10,000th visitor to Whisk and, for this reason, Shari sent me a box full of fun food-related items . . . gadgets, coffee and other fun stuff. Thanks, again, Shari! You'll be seeing some of the things Shari sent me in the coming months and I'll be sure to note them. So, with no futher ado, here's the meme.
What was I doing ten years ago?
Moving from Montana to Los Angeles and learning how to surf.
What are five (non-work) things on my to-do list for today?
1. shopping at my local farmers market
2. buying a book on portrait photography
3. lounging by the pool on the roof of my apartment building
4. cooking the rabbit that's in my freezer
5. going to a Pearl Jam concert
Five snacks I enjoy:
1. peaches
2. cherries
3. baguette with brie
4. beer
5. salt and vinegar potato chips
Things I would do if I were a billionaire:
1. insist on my parents' retirement
2. hire a driver for my parents
3. pay off my enormous student loan debt and not-so-enormous credit card debt
4. take a food tour of the world, arranging for friends and family to rendezvous with me for different legs of the journey (my treat, of course)
5. create an endowment for the nonprofit organization that currently employs me
Places I've lived (an incomplete list):
1. Scranton, PA
2. Bar Harbor, ME
3. Missoula, MT
4. Los Angeles, CA
5. Washington, DC
Jobs I've had:
1. grocery store clerk
2. dish washer
3. janitor
4. retail salesperson
5. attorney
Now, under the rules that came with this meme, I'm supposed to tag five other bloggers. But I'm going to instead engage in a little experiment. I'm going to remove the chain-mail aspect of this meme and see if it might nevertheless survive. Instead of me tagging you, I'll let all y'all tag yourselves. If you'd like to play, leave a comment here linking to your blog and then answer the questions on your blog.
So tag...you're it . . . if you want to be!

AGH! I give up. But before I do: let me just put this out there: banana. That's my guess. Pathetic. It's a longshot!
Hahaha, beer is not a snack! Oh well, to each his own

Sorry . . . it's not banana. Nice try, though. And beer is a snack . . . sometimes it's even a meal.

beer is liquid bread; grain, yeast and water.

I think it is a snack; there's a sandwich in every beer. (I think I like beer more than sandwiches, in any event.) Fun to read meme.

Venus flytrap?

Good guess . . . but no.

Can you give us a clue? Region it is native to, or if it's edible or not. Looks like some sort of fern to me, but who knows!
Reply to this
It's a perennial that's native, I believe, to the eastern U.S. And, though I believe it's edible (not 100% certain), it's not considered by most to be food. And it's not a fern.

Is it a sunflower? (although it looks a little like Seymour from Little Shop of Horrors...)
I'll be answering the questions on my blog, www.cookandbook.blogspot.com
Reply to this
Getting close! If, by sunflower, you mean within the family Asteraceae . . . the world's largest family of flowering plants, then yes; but if by sunflower you mean the actual flower most commonly called a sunflower, Helianthus annuus, or any of the other plants in the genus Helianthus, then no. It's within the family Asteraceae, but not within the typically-referred-to-as-sunflowers genus Helianthus.
Sooooooooooooo . . . here's how we'll play this out. I'll set the deadline as Wednesday. If someone can name the genus and species by midnight Wednesday, they win. If not, then anyone naming just the genus will win. And if no one gets the genus, then Teresa wins for correctly identifying the family.

It's a trick question. That's the plant from Little Shop of Horrors. Don't feed him Seymour, I mean FRM!

I think it might be related or is the artichoke, which are related to sunflowers. Although you said it is not considered edible but it edible. They are perrenial though. Could be Cynara scolymus, but I really have no idea. Or the Jeruselem artichoke but I don't think it grows like that! That's my best and last guess. Either way, did you take this picture? It's gorgeous.
Reply to this
Sorry . . . but nope . . . it's not artichoke. And yes, I did take the photo, so thanks for your kind words. You won't believe where I took it . . . in the 7th Street Garden!

my eyes are burning because i've just looked at about 400 pics of flowers in the Asteraceae family.

I've been trying to use Google Images to hunt down this funny looking plant too, but no luck! I give up since I've already wasted too much time already on this scavenger hunt!
Thanks for playing along! How was the rabbit? Rabbit stew is on my list...

rudbeckia hirta?
Reply to this
Ladies and gentlemen . . . we have a winner! Yes, it's rudbeckia hirta . . . a.k.a. black-eyed susan. It's a mutant in the early stage of bloom. I have a photo on my home machine of a mutant black-eyed susan in full bloom surrounded by non-mutant black-eyed susans, from the same flower bed in the 7th Street Garden. I'll post it tonight or tomorrow.
Nicely done! Send me an email, Zehill, at foodrockzman(at)foodrockz.com with your mailing address if you'd like to claim your prize.

This looks a tiny bit like a I guy I dated.

Ouch! Someone else told me it looked like girl parts, if you know what I mean. Which is it . . . some funky-looking dude or girl parts? I think I might have to move this discussion over to my Food Rockz After Dark site!

It's a baby sunflower unfolding or in other words the above ground part of a Jerusalem artichoke. That is my final answer.
And I hereby tag myself . . !
