Trouble Coffee

Everybody likes a little trouble now and then . . . some of us more than others. I began Sunday on the west side of San Francisco in Ocean Beach with a double espresso at Trouble Coffee. Trouble Coffee's a refreshing antidote to Starbucks . . . a bare bones operation . . . no add-on sales . . . just strong coffee drinks, coconuts and toast. Why coconuts and toast? I have no clue. But that's the deal at Trouble Coffee. Stop by and ask Giulietta. She comes across as a straight shooter—I bet she'll give you an answer. Oh yeah, there are dilli beans too—spicy delicious pickled green beans—my hostess with the mostess bought a jar and they ended up in bloody marys by early afternoon. I love the shop's sign . . . the waves across the "f"s reflect its beachside location . . . and the drill on the sign is certainly appropriate given that the place feels more like a workshop of some sort than a coffee shop . . . tools hanging from peg-boarded walls and falling out of tool boxes. Stop by and check it out . . . but you might want to think twice before ordering a double-mocha-half-fat-skinny-tall-corn-syrup-jive-ola-coffee-beverage . . . it really doesn't feel like that kind of place.

How refreshing.. a "real" coffee shop. I was starting to think those had gone extinct.
